Restaurant & Bar Recommendations

Note: I am currently working on full reviews with photos where I have them and more thoughts & info, but this is the master list of everywhere I’ve personally been to here in Charleston.

~

KEY INFO: I am personally predominantly plant based. I will eat dairy / vegetarian sometimes when I’m out at restaurants in order to more fully experience a menu, but I don’t consume any meat or fish. I have been to a few restaurants in town that cater to the meat / fish crowd when I have had friends and relatives visit, so I’ll note what kind of veggie friendly options I had available there. But, you won’t see anything that is just a BBQ or Steakhouse due to my personal dietary choices and the availability of food I can eat on the menu.

~

Notes:

🥦🥦 = Vegetarian / Vegan Friendly Focus or will always have veggie friendly menu items other than salad

🥦 = Some Vegetarian / Vegan Friendly Options

🍸🍷🍺 = Cocktail Bar or Distillery / Wine Bar / Brewery (I’ll note if they have any food selections)

🌟 = Personal Favorite

👍 = Enjoyed it and would go again

😕 = Meh (I didn’t hate it, but I wasn’t super impressed either. Ok option in a pinch but I wouldn’t go out of my way to return)

👎 = Didn’t enjoy it, won’t be returning (I don’t like leaving overly negative reviews / going into the details of a bad experience, so I’ll try to give this symbol infrequently and will specify if it was the food itself or the service / experience that warranted it.)

🐶 = Dog friendly

Victoria’s Top Picks

By area - Downtown

South of Calhoun Street & Marion Square

  • On / Off King Street

    • Basic Kitchen - 🌟🥦🥦 - American - Lovely atmosphere, nice bar / cocktail list, and a delicious menu. They always have multiple inventive plant-based options on the menu.

    • Off Track Ice Cream - 👍🥦🥦 - They always have multiple tasty non-sorbet vegan flavors (other spots on King street only do sorbet for non-dairy)

    • Le Farfalle - 👍🥦 - Italian - Delicious mix of modern and traditional Italian dishes. Nice bar & wine selection. As with any Italian place, some of the pasta dishes are vegetarian. It’s the only place I’ve seen broccoli rabe on the menu (the older generation Italians will appreciate that).

    • Harken Café - 👍🥦 - Adorable café with tasty breakfast options. Lots of vegetarian things but limited vegan. In the busy season get there before 8am to get a table, otherwise there will be a line.

      • 🐶 Very small outdoor patio area, chairs are close together so I’d only recommend small dogs. Fully covered.

    • Husk - 👍 - Elevated Southern - Famous chef (James Beard winner), locally sourced menu with a focus on southern ingredients and recipes. Food quality is good, service is fantastic, but the veggie options are oddly limited. Dinner special “vegetable plate” is just a plate of sides, not a full entrée.

    • The Black Door Café (at the Mills House hotel) - 👍 - Coffee & Tea, good location in the middle of downtown, and a nice spot for a break from the heat in summer for a few minutes with your cold beverage if you’re visiting.

    • Lenoir (at the Lindy Renaissance hotel) - 🥦👍 for food / 😕 for adjacent guest experience (hopefully the staff involved have been addressed) - Southern - Lovely setting and central cocktail bar, many vegetarian options (sides mostly but hearty and you can make a meal out of them) but not much vegan.

  • On / Off East Bay Street

    • Scotty Doesn't Know Speakeasy - 🌟🍷- Wine Bar - This hidden gem is a step into the past. Definitely make a reservation ahead of time. This tiny places is a spot to enjoy a well-curated wine list in a unique setting. Great for before or after dinner, only light snacks available.

    • Magnolias - 👍🥦 - Elevated Southern - A classic Charleston spot, get a little dressed up for this one. The food is delicious (they always have one or two vegetarian options on the entrée list), and the service is top notch.

    • The Gin Joint - 👍🍸 - Cocktail Bar - The cocktails here are very involved and the bartenders know their stuff cold. If you' ever want to try something unique check this place out. They also offer small plates for food but I wouldn’t plan on this for full dinner.

      • 🐶 Small outdoor patio, open air (no rain protection)

    • Revival (at The Vendue hotel) - 👍🥦 - High-end Lowcountry - Fine dining with funky art (check out the bathrooms!). A lot of the large sharing plates “for the table” are veggie friendly and very tasty.

    • Hank’s Seafood - Seafood - 👍 Service & if you eat seafood / 😕 for no good veggie options - I brought my mom here because she loves seafood and she really enjoyed her dishes. Service was wonderful. I went in knowing the menu was limited and I could only get a salad and some sides (most if not all cooked in butter).

    • Henry’s On the Market - Pub/Bar Food + Live Music - 👍 for the bar & music part / 😕 for no good veggie options - Good spot downtown for simple but tasty pub fare + live music on the weekends. Only real veggie options are an artichoke dip, a salad, and fries.

    • Slightly North of Broad (SNOB) - Southern / Lowcountry - 😕 for limited veggie options - I've only been her for lunch at the bar, but the veggie friendly options for all of the menus are limited (in some cases only the sides are veggies).

      • 🐶 A few tables are on the sidewalk, only 3-4 though so I’d call ahead if you’re set on bringing the doggo

    • Rudy Royale - Sothern / Chicken - 😕 for limited veggie options - This is mostly known as a place to get chicken, but the menu does have a bunch of vegetarian friendly sides. There is a LOT of cheese / dairy style dressing on everything so keep that in mind.

Broad Street

  • Sorelle - 🌟🥦 - Italian - This is an absolutely gorgeous newer restaurant right on Broad Street. There are a bunch of different rooms (Lounge / Bar, wine cellar room, pizza counter, and main dining room, plus a market counter). I had a delicious dinner here recently and the food and service were exceptional. Typical for Italian menus, plenty of vegetarian options. Their market counter also makes a lovely option for lunch if you’re exploring downtown.

    • 🐶 Outdoor sidewalk table seating, small number of tables compared to inside so I’d call ahead to confirm. There’s also the to-go market if you want to take things to the local parks instead.

  • Gaulart & Maliclet Fast and French Inc. - 👍🥦🥦 - French Café - This spot is right on Broad street and they have a lot of tables along the sidewalk. Great spot for a light lunch, with a mix of soups, salads, and open faced sandwiches. They always have vegan & vegetarian options (ask for the “O’Vegan” soup & sandwich combo.

    • 🐶 Outdoor sidewalk table seating

  • Brasserie La Banque - French - 👍 for atmosphere & bar/ 😕 for no / limited veggie options - This building and bar are gorgeous, but this is very much a French restaurant so by definition nothing is vegan. There are a few salads and a few sides that are vegetarian though.

The Boroughs (Cannonborough, Elliotborough, Radcliffeborough, & Wraggborough) aka South of the Parkway and North of Calhoun Street - All On or walkable from King Street

  • Chasing Sage - 🌟🥦🥦 - One of my favorite places in town, this place has everything. The people are wonderful and the food, my god the food. Everything is local and seasonal and so so inventive. If you are only going once during a visit, get a cocktail and order the “pick for the table” option for a multi-course dinner of delicious.

    • 🐶 A couple of outdoor sidewalk tables are available, not usually an option for online reservations. Call to pick those or just try your luck (2-tops only)

  • Neon Tiger - 🌟🥦🥦 - Vegan - One of my other favorite places in town, elevated vegan comfort food classics (pizzas, burgers, and even some crab cakes), not to mention wonderful people, fantastic cocktails, and a chocolate cake to die for. A must visit for plant-based and non-veggies alike!

    • 🐶 Very dog friendly, make a reservation for the covered patio (covered for sun not rain)

  • Little Line Bakery - 🌟🥦🥦 - Breakfast Café - One of my go-to breakfast spots, they have a vegan breakfast sandwich and a lovely patio. What more can you ask for.

    • 🐶 Super doggo friendly, there’s a jar of treats at the ordering counter, both indoor and outdoor seating

  • Camellias (at the Hotel Bennett) - 👍🍷 - Champagne Bar - one of the classiest places in Charleston for a lovely cocktail. They also offer high-tea. Definitely a place to go for a special occasion.

  • Coterie - 👍🥦 - Indian - I would call this modern Indian: smaller plates & inventive flavor pairings. I’ve never actually eaten inside because the patio / outdoor bar is so nice and has a covered area.

    • 🐶 Covered outdoor patio bar + larger open-air patio garden are all dog friendly

  • Cutty’s - 👍🍺 - Dive Bar - Everyone needs a good dive bar, and this one is the perfect mix of walkable from King Street but no tourists go there. They also have a pop-up that serves ramen 1- times a week (check out Weems on instagram).

  • Dalila’s - 👍🍸 - Cocktail Bar - Small place right off King street, so a great option to avoid some of the high-season crowds. Inventive cocktails.

  • Indaco - 👍🥦 - Italian - Another delicious Italian place right on King. I always end up with some kind of pasta special. I also recommend the Amaro flight with dessert.

  • Maya - 👍🥦 - Mexican - Nice selection of dishes, and I was personally impressed by the hostess. My Opentable / Resy profile says vegan / vegetarian and they made sure to give me a full rundown of what things on the menu were fully vegan and what was vegetarian without me even having to ask. Very nice service touch.

  • The Rarebit - 👍🥦🥦 - American - Decent cocktails, and a good bar menu including vegan options. The vegan impossible burger / patty melt is just the right amount of greasy to really hit the spot sometimes. Good for lunch.

  • Sourghum & Salt - 🥦🥦- Farm to Table with very inventive dishes. Grabbing a seat at the chef’s counter is a fun way to both see into the kitchen, but also chat with the chefs directly about the dishes.

  • Stella’s - 👍🥦 - Greek - The inside of this place is pretty unique, there are 2 square bars in the middle of the restaurant that offer a lot of 1-2 person seating and easy access to a cocktail. As for the food, you can get a great Greek spread.

  • Bourbon N' Bubbles - 😕🍸 - Cocktail Bar + American food - I’ve been here once… the food was good. The cocktails were good. But everything was a bit overpriced and it felt like it was trying to be too over the top trendy. This one is for the Instagram influencers, and not the average tourist (in my opinion at least).

  • The Darling Oyster Bar - 😕 - Seafood - As the name says this has an oyster & seafood focus. I went with friends so I ended up with a side of fries. Cool atmosphere and a nice bar, but not for the veggie inclined.

  • Felix Cocktails et Cuisine - 😕 - French - Focus on seafood & meat, I got a patio table once for brunch which was nice but overall not for the veggie inclined.

    • 🐶 A few outdoor sidewalk tables

  • Prohibition - 😕🍸 - Bar - A popular spot right on King Street - They sometimes have live music or a DJ, but overall it’s a loud bar with minimal seating. They make a good cocktail but after a certain hour it’s not worth the crowds.

  • Xiao Bao Biscuit - 😕🥦 - Pan-Asian - Most folks love this place, but I was a bit underwhelmed. There were oddly very few vegetarian friendly things on the menu (rare for Asian cuisine), and the one I had was only OK. Let’s just say I didn’t get the hype.

    • 🐶 Outdoor seating (uncovered)
